George IV Bridge is the home of National Library of Scotland and was built between 1937 and 1956.
The Library is a Grade B Listed Building and is generally in good condition. However the external envelope required refurbishment to ensure it continued to protect the Collections within.
The scope of our Main Contract works included:
(1) Rectifying isolated defects in stonework.
(2) 100% repointing stonework to all elevations.
(3) Stone carving conservation work.
(4) Overcladding rendered rear elevations with Alumasc insulated render system.
(5) Overlaying original main flat roofs with a “warm” mastic asphalt roofing system.
(6) The removal of the existing 30m long main reading room rooflight, installing new steel kerb upstand and replacement rooflight with a new traditional glazing bar system with double glazed units and a safety handrail around the perimeter of the rooflight.
(7) Breaking out 4 previously infilled rooflights to the north and south reading rooms, installing a new steel kerb upstand and traditional glazing bar system as above.
(8) Overhaul / repair all timber sash and case windows.
(9) Installing floodlighting to front elevation.
(10) New galvanized steel walkways and stairs to facilitate improved roof access.
